Crochet Crafts
Tobatenun x Rumah Faye
Crafting and making is one of the most fundamental ways in which we express ourselves. It is a way to celebrate, share, grief, innovate, think, and sometimes rebel against the constraints of the modern world. Throughout history, it is an especially helpful platform for girls and women. We wanted to highlight this relationship of crafting with resilience by collaborating with an organisation that shares our values, especially in the protection of girls and women from sexual violence.
Rumah Faye is a nonprofit organisation that started in Jakarta in 2013 with the aim to prevent, rescue, and assist recovery for victims of child sexual trafficking. Recognising the Riau islands as a trafficking transit point, a safehouse in Batam was thus built in order to house survivors.
Our crochet pouches are handmade by survivors and its wrist straps by rural artisans, together culminating our campaign of ‘Perempuan Dirayakan’ where we celebrate women supporting women. Both hard and soft skills are key to building a brighter future, and crafting is one of the many ways in which Rumah Faye encourages confidence and resilience in their road to recovery.
