Batak Toba  jewellery is traditionally made of a variety of metals and beads, with its oldest most popular motif being ‘Duri-Duri’. Literally meaning ‘thorns’’, this pendant earrings is completely covered in large  spikes. As the Toba people believe that objects can be apotropaic and hold its own soul, the thorns can be seen to keep away its wearer from harm.
