Symbolising harmony and fertility, Mangiring is a sign of good wishes from its giver during joyous occasions. Generally, it is given to a new mother after the birth of her first child by her parents. The cloth carries not only a wish of wellness for both mother and child, but also the hope that more children will follow in the future.
Mangiring can also be used as tali tali or headwrap by men or a headscarf by women before the birth of their first child. It's more practical use includes as a sling or wrap for babies and toddlers, usually handed down once they become older.
