For the Toba people, Ragi Idup is a particularly important ulos used in several customary occasions. It may be used as ulos passamot, a gift from the bride’s parents to the groom’s parents, with the prerequisite that the gifters must already have grandchildren or marpahompu.
In other celebratory times such as birthdays or promotions, it may be given as ulos pasu-pasu as a gift of prayer. However, it is also used in more solemn situations given to the deceased as ulos saput only if they have grandchildren.
